Serbian Patriarch Irinej reposed in the Lord

His pious parents Zdravko and MilijanaGavrilovic from the village of Vidova near Cacak – and with them the entire Serbian family – were blessed the by the Lord, on August 27, 1930, with the birth of a male child whose baptismal name was Miroslav. He finished elementary school in his native village and high school in Cacak and the Theological School in Prizren, Kosovo and Metohia. Thereupon he graduated from the Faculty of Theology in Belgrade. 

After completing his military service, he was appointed professor of the Prizren Theological School, but before accepting the appointment he received monastic tonsure in the monastery of Rakovica, n. Rakovica, by the Serbian Patriarch German, receiving the monastic name Irinej, inOctober 1959. On the Holy and Great Friday of the same year, he was ordained a hieromonk in the church of Ruzica, Belgrade. As professor at the Prizren Theological School, he spent some years at postgraduate studies in Athens. He was appointed principal of the Monastic School in the Ostrog monastery in 1969, from where he returned to Prizren to the position of Principal of that famous Theological School.

It was in 1974 that he was elected Vicar Bishop of the Serbian Patriarch with the title of Bishop of Moravica. He was elected Bishop of Nis in 1975.

ДЕЧИЈИ КУЛТУРНИ ФЕСТИВАЛ И СРПСКИ ДАНИ У СИЈЕТЛУ
У суботу, 22. јуна, у позоришној сали Белвју комјунити колеџа прославили смо други по реду „Српски дечији фестивал културе“ који је ове године био посвећен великом јубилеју – 800 година аутокефалности Српске Православне Цркве. Свих десет разреда Школе „Свети Сава“ у Сијетлу је заблистало са својим тачкама, од најмлађих, који су се представили са скечом „Деда и репа“, до најстаријих, који су нас почастили прилогом српске историје, од Немањића па до данас. И све тачке између најмлађих и најстаријих су и ђаке и публику подједнако подсетиле да ми, Срби у Америци, имамо и културу и историју и уметности и језик које носимо у себи као неодвојиве од свог бића.

Програм Фестивала је трајао око два и по сата. Изводило је свих десет разреда: пет разреда српског језика, два веронауке и три ваннаставних активности (фолклор, оркестар и хор). Програм је био разнолик, весео, поучан и динамичан, а што је најважније, видело се да су деца уживала у свим својим тачкама. То што наши ђаци уче целе године кроз часове, игру, песму, позориште, доживљавају у заједништву да је то „српско“ што носе у себи вредно очувања. То се јасно видело на Фестивалу.

Church Slava Celebration

On the Fourth Sunday after Pascha, May 19, 2019, parishioners of St. Sava Church in Seattle celebrated their Patronal Feast Day – Transfer of the Relics of St. Sava. After the Divine Liturgy and traditional Slava Procession around the Church, Fr. Zoran Aleksic together with the Slava Kumovi, Milan and Renata Radic, blessed and cut the Kolac (Slava Bread) wishing everyone blessed and happy Slava. The Kumovi of the Church Slava for next year are Srdjan and Regina Jovic. May the Lord God bless both Families abundantly.   

Many parishioners contributed to the festive luncheon, and this joyful celebration continued in the Church Hall with the music of our “Svirci”. This year we were honored to have for the first time guslar Dragomir Bojat who played a couple of famous Serbian heroic and epic poems for the enjoyment of all.

У суботу, 20. априла, наша заједница окупљена око цркве Св.Сава у Исакви је себи уприличила дивно вече проведено у читању српских родољубивих стихова. Прохладно априлско вече је било створено за слушање и читање како поетског блага које су нам оставила народна поколења вековима брусивши епске стихове косовског и пост-косовског периода, тако и легендарних песника српског романтизма.
У почетку се кроз стихове Смрт Мајке Југовића вратисмо у време битке која нам је постала и судбина и везивно ткиво колективне душе. Косовска мука и избор Цара Лазара је утрла пут свим следећим изборима српског народа. Кроз стихове Његоша и Доситеја сетисмо се епохе националног ослобођења, и сталне потребе за јединством. Период националног романтизма се лепо рефлектује у Шантићевим стиховима:

Не плачем само с болом свога срца
Рад` земље ове убоге и голе;
Мене све ране мога рода боле,
И моја душа с њим пати и грца.

Ови стихови као да лако прескачу до 21. века и до нас који живимо хиљаде километара далеко од отаџбине. Са сетом и поносом одслушасмо и дивне стихове Змаја, Ђуре Јакшића, Диса, Милутина Бојића. MESSAGE ON THE COMMENCEMENT OF HOLY AND GREAT LENT 2019

To the clergy, monastics and faithful of our God-protected Diocese

This Sunday we look to forgiveness as we enter the holy journey of Great Lent. Forgiveness is truly a “breakthrough” of the Kingdom into this fallen world. The Church gives us the gift of Great Lent so that we can find true renewal in Christ. Only a repentant heart is on the path to the return to unity and love.

As the sacred hymnography of the Church urges us, all the ascetic elements—fasting, abstinence, frugality, restriction of personal desires, intense prayer, almsgiving, and confession—are essential to the period of Great Lent. They are preconditions for our Eucharistic communion with God and movement of love, and the reunion and harmony with others. Just as the sacrifice on the Cross takes its meaning from the Resurrection, so all our Lenten effort find their fulfillment in Holy Communion.

However, for all too many today, the fast is only identified with eating certain foods and avoiding certain others. This has unfortunately annulled the other important fasts which are found in the tradition of our faith and which demonstrate the creative nature of Christian fasting. In our tradition, we find four types of fasting: a complete abstaining from food, abstaining from food until mid-afternoon; eating less in order to save money for the purpose of almsgiving, and abstaining not from food, but from one’s favorite activities. What mattered was the reason for fasting, not its duration, which was directly dependent on that reason. Also, the real meaning of fasting lay not in the type of food, but on abstinence. Unfortunately, very often, delicious and luxurious foods are welcomed by some as a form of fasting, provided they do not contain the prohibited non-lenten ingredients. With such practices, wealthy Christians are enabled to be identified as good, for they can “fast” for months on end by eating various types of expensive meals, while poorer Christians are not so, for they cannot afford such expensive cuisine.

Another quandary for our actual understanding of fasting is the reality of those who identify as vegetarians and vegans. What shall the Church subscribe to the vast number of those who never eat meat anyway? According to Church rules concerning fasting, such people already fast all the time. So, our current understanding of fasting deprives them of the possibility to be, from time to time, engaged in this common lenten initiative of the Church, because the Church already views them as fasting from particular foods all the time.

Therefore, in inviting you to the “opened arena of virtues” from our Episcopal seat, I want to encourage you this year, as you fast, to practive benevolence in the form ofalmsgiving. This is an opportunity to reach out to others with the very love of Christ in concrete ways as for example, almsgiving to the poor and those in need. In this case, true fasting (Lent) will become the opposite of pleonexia (greed, avarice), i.e., an inhuman approach which leads the contemporary global community into a spiritual crisis.

May His grace be with you during these celebrated seasons and feast.
